Kenya’s Turkana region is suffering drought along with 22 other arid and semi-arid counties in the country, according to a government declaration of emergency last February.
Seen here is a woman and her child from the Loima community of Turkana county, during a visit by a county nutrition and health team supported by the UN Children’s Agency.
The UN says it has helped repair water points in drought-affected counties of Turkana, Garissa and Marsabit and also provided funds to reach drought victims with health outreach services in remote areas.
Malnutrition as a consequence of drought has been reported. UN statistics show that 40% of 8,738 children screened for acute malnutrition in Turkana and North Horr (Marsabit) counties were identified as acutely moderately or severely malnourished and referred for treatment.
