BOSASO — Police in Somalia’s semi-autonomous Puntland region have arrested five men suspected of being Al Shabaab militants at the port town of Bosaso.
Several improvised explosive devices (IEDs) belonging to the suspected militants were also seized in the police anti-terrorist operation, according to police chief Abdulhakim Yusuf Hussein.
Hussein told journalists that the operation had been carried out by police soldiers on Tuesday night following a public tip-off, adding that the explosives were intended to target three key areas in the town.
“We arrested five suspected Al Shabab members in the Bosaso operation. The detainees are also being interrogated in the police station,” Hussein added.
He says police soldiers have been intensifying operations to hunt down dozens of suspected Al Shabaab militants, who are hiding in villages around the town.
“These militants will be brought to justice,” according to Hussein.
Bosaso has witnessed a surge in attacks and assassinations against security force members and senior Puntland commanders; some attacks are claimed by Al Shabaab.
