Kenya – Raila named NASA flag bearer

Raila Odinga has been named by the Kenyan opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) as the presidential candidate in the 2017 election against President Uhuru Kenyatta of Jubilee.

The announcement on Thursday at Uhuru Park in Nairobi came after weeks of negotiations and tensions amongst the NASA coalition parties. The coalition now calls Raila “the flag bearer of the NASA team, one amongst equals.”

Kalonzo Musyoka of the Wiper Democratic Movement will serve as Raila’s running mate in the contest and ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi will take the position of premier cabinet secretary in the event of a win — a position that would need to be created.

Under the premier would be two deputies of equal rank — Isaac Rutto of CCM in charge of the State Department of Devolution and Planning and Moses Wetang’ula of Ford Kenya in charge of Public Service.

NASA’s presidential candidate, Raila, 72, contested the presidency in 1997, 2007 and in 2013 but lost. He was Kenya’s prime minister from 2008-2012 under a power sharing deal, with former President Mwai Kibaki.
