Somalia: Five men detained in Galkacyo over raping a girl

GALKACYO — Somalia’s Galmudug State police have on Saturday arrested five men accused of raping a little girl last Thursday night in Galkacyo town.

The police chief in central Somalia’s Mudug region, Mohamed Ali Nor told journalists that suspects had been detained in an operation carried out by police in parts of the south of Galkacyo.

“They (the alleged rapists) are at the police station in the town. We are interrogating them. They will be brought to justice,” Nor said.

“We heard loud screams of what sounded like a female voice coming from a home in the south of the town,” a freelance journalist, Ali Hassan Barkadle, quoting neighbors, told The Messenger Africa.

Barkadle said that police made contact with the victim, allegedly saying that the five men had sexually assaulted her, slapped her face and slammed her to the ground.

Last month, three men were put behind bars after being accused of raping a young girl in a small village in central Somalia’s Mudug region.
