MOGADISHU – A suspected US drone strike has hit Al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Shabaab fighters in southern Somalia, according to Somalia’s military.

Wednesday’s strike killed 11 militants Sanguni area, some 45 km from Kismayo town, according to Somali military chief Osmail Sahardid.

Gen. Sahardid said that the drone strike killed 11 militants near the coastal town of Kismayo. “Earlier today, an airstrike killed 11 militants, including four mid-level al-Shabaab commanders in Sanguni area near Kismayo,” he said

There was no immediate comment from Al-Shabaab over the bombing. Last year, the US military increased its airstrikes in Somalia, leaving dozens of Shabaab militants dead.
