MOGADISHU – Somali special forces accompanied by US commandos stormed a camp belonging to al-Shabaab militants in an overnight raid last Friday, killing dozens of fighters, according to a Somali government official.
The joint military offensive took place in Jamame district of lower Jubba region, some 70 km (43 miles) north of Kismayu.
Minister for Security of Jubbaland State Abdirashid Hassan Abdinur said that 38 militants were killed in the operation carried out by Somali and US forces. Abdinur added that coalition forces also attacked al-Shabaab targets in Berhani and Kanjaron areas near the coastal town of Kismayu.
“I can confirm to media that Somali and US forces killed 38 terrorists in Jamane and other small areas near Kismayo,” Abdinur said. He told journalists that operations against the rebel-held towns would continue until the group’s fighters are eradicated.
For its part, Al-Shabaab claimed to have foiled an “attempted airborne attack” by US and Somali troops. There was no immediate word from Somali federal authorities or by the US Africa Command on the operation in Jamame town.
