BAIDOA – Suspected Al-Shabaab militants have carried out an ambush targeting an armoured vehicle carrying Somali military soldiers near Baidoa, some 250km southwest of Mogadishu.
Monday’s surprise attack killed a military boss, Lt. Colonel Abdirahman Osman Abrone, and three of his bodyguards, according to a military officer, Harun Mohamed.
Mohamed said that the militants ambushed the vehicle while it was escorting vehicles transporting khat in the Lug Habare area near Baidoa.
“We lost a regional military commander and three other soldiers in an Al-Shabaab attack. We killed several militants during the gunfight,” he said.
The Somalia-based group Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack on its website.
